I started by scanning in my rough sketch.

Then I began to trace the letterforms in Illustrator.

This is the final product of the tracing in Illustrator.

After adjusting some of the curves and lines, I merge the shapes and switch to a black fill for a better view of the letterforms.

Then I switched the fill to white and created a black border. Then I blended the black border with a smaller copy of itself positioned lower to create depth and dimension.

Then I added an old school halftone-ish pattern in blue. I did this by offsetting the path of the ‘logo’, making a compound path from that using that as a mask for the blue pattern.

Here’s the finished product after loading the background down with textures and good ol’ halftone pattern for good measure.

I did this project completely pro-bono for a family member’s band that had no identity at all. It served to thank them for performing at a benefit concert/dance.

I also took this project to practice a process that is laid out in a much more thorough tutorial at GoMedia. And while I don’t think my final product can even hold a candle to the example over at GoMedia, it was a fun exercise. Be sure to check out the original tutorial here, and give it a shot yourself.
